Punk Provocation: Challenging Paul Rand Through Rebellion and Expression
For my project, I aimed to create a poster that directly contradicted Paul Rand’s design philosophy, hoping to provoke a reaction that challenged his ideals. Many artists create appropriations to disrupt and critique the ideas of past designers, illustrating the disconnect between their perspectives and our own. Art is rarely inclusive—it resonates only with those who share the mindset or values of its creators.
Inspired by the punk era, I designed a poster that captures the rebellious spirit of that time—a period defined by bold self-expression and defiance against societal norms. Much like the hippie movement and its psychedelic posters, punk posters demanded an insider's perspective to fully grasp their message. To achieve this, I distressed and layered cloth to give my design a worn, aged appearance. I then overlaid freshly printed punk posters, blending chaos and creativity to form a raw, unapologetic artistic statement.
